Privacy Policy

DanteTerm is a terminal application published by Dante Labs. This policy describes exactly what the application sends, what it never sends, and how to turn the sending off.

It covers the DanteTerm desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux, including the version distributed through the Microsoft Store.

What DanteTerm sends​

DanteTerm collects anonymous usage telemetry to understand which features are used and where the application fails. Telemetry is enabled by default and can be turned off at any time.

The following is the complete list of what a telemetry event may contain:

About the installation

  • Application version, initial installed version, and build time
  • CPU architecture and package type (installer, Store package, and so on)
  • Operating system release, and macOS version on macOS
  • Local shell type and version (for example zsh, pwsh)
  • Country and region code
  • The month and ISO week the installation was first seen

About usage

  • Minutes the application was open, in the foreground, and active
  • Number of terminal commands run, and how many were remote, durable, or WSL
  • Which block types were opened (terminal, editor, preview, web)
  • Screen width, height, and device pixel ratio
  • Whether the first launch or first day of use occurred
  • Counts only — how many custom settings, custom widgets, and stored secrets exist
  • Whether auto-update is enabled and which channel is selected
  • Whether an action was started by keyboard or mouse
  • Connection error codes, and crash types when the application panics

What DanteTerm never sends​

The following never leave your machine:

  • The contents of any command you type, and any command output
  • The contents of any file you open, edit, or preview
  • Credentials and secrets. These are held in your operating system's own secure storage (Keychain on macOS, Credential Manager on Windows, Secret Service on Linux) and are never transmitted to Dante Labs
  • SSH hostnames, usernames, IP addresses, and connection configuration
  • File paths, directory names, and working directories
  • Your name, email address, or any account identifier. DanteTerm requires no account and has no sign-in

Only the counts described above are sent — for example, the number of stored secrets, never the secrets themselves.

Where it goes​

Telemetry is sent to servers operated by Dante Labs at dante-labs.com. It is used to guide development. It is not sold, and it is not shared with third parties for advertising.

How to turn it off​

Open the settings file and set:

Nothing is sent once this is set. The application is fully functional with telemetry disabled.

Updates​

Outside the Microsoft Store, DanteTerm checks for updates by contacting the Dante Labs release server. This request carries the application version and platform so the correct update can be returned.

The Microsoft Store version does not do this. Store packages are updated by the Store itself, and the built-in updater is disabled in that build.

Data retention and your rights​

Telemetry is anonymous and is not linked to a named individual, so Dante Labs cannot look up, export, or delete "your" records on request — there is no identifier that maps to you.

If you would prefer that nothing is sent at all, disable telemetry as described above.

Children​

DanteTerm is a developer tool and is not directed at children.
